From The Archives

We have been sent an interesting photo of 5199 taken by Fred Kerr at Barry on the 15th November 1969. Two things are remarkable about this view:The comparative completeness of her at this date, 6 years into her stay at Barry. The visibility of the older Great Western lettering showing through the later British Railways livery.I guess that Barry scrapyard was only just beginning to become well known

November Update

Just a quick update this time.Jon Kerr and I went down to Cheddleton last Saturday to lend a hand as 5199 is being prepared for her annual boiler inspection, which we are sure she will pass.CVR Volunteers had already removed the washout plugs, bottom mudhole doors and firegrate the previous day and we assisted Chris Meadowcroft by removing the firebox top mudhole door covers, then went

5199 AGM

Saturday 17th September saw the 5199 AGM of 2011 held at the CVR. The Shareholders were invited for free travel on the CVR for the day behind their loco, and the AGM was held on the 11:10 departure from Kingsley & Froghall in the lines recently restored FK which was reserved for the group. Footplate rides were also offered to those members wishing a ride 'up front'. The day though started at 6am for

A Grand Day Out

What a fantastic day we all had on the 30th July. The sun came out, and 5199 was looking very clean and polished thanks to the CVR volunteer effort during the week. Two trips to Cauldon Lowe and back were sampled before the final farewell photo opportunity.5199 and invited membershipI hope that all of you that attended enjoyed the sight and sound of 5199 attacking the bank ( which rises higher than

July Update

Sorry for the lack of news but have been rather busy with work, so haven't been down to CVR as much as I would have liked. The last update mentioned the expansion links, well these went off to Tyseley to be refurbished, but a call from Bob told us something we didn’t really want to hear though there is nothing we could do about it. It would appear one set of the expansion links is of a 2800,

May Update

Jon Kerr and I went down to the CVR to do a day in the shed on Friday 27th May to help the railway prepare for the Bank Holiday ahead. First job started by Gregg was to drill out the holes for a set of new brake blocks for 5199.Drilling the holes in one of the brake blocks (W Naylor) We worked out some basic measurements and Chris Simcock centre-punched the remaining 5x blocks. After making a couple

5199 in the News

Leafing through the various railway magazines in my local library WH Smith I noticed a large number of sightings our very own 5199! Steam Railway Mag has a picture of her in the gallery section, an arty shot of the bunker in Boltons Copperworks, taken by Les Nixon from a broken window. Heritage Railway Mag then has a half a page picture of her storming up the 1in 59 towards Bradnop in glorious sunshine,

Easter Update Part 2

Continuing on from the last update. The brake problem seemed to persist and then sadly she was failed in service on 29th April. However since her arrival at CVR in January 2009, this is only her second failure in service, which is actually quite impressive when you think of the number of days she has worked. She has pretty much been the only serviceable steam loco at the CVR during her time here, except

Easter Update Part 1

Sorry for the delay in updates, both myself and Jon have been busy with work so we have been unable to provide as many regular updates. However, our first report is from Good Friday (Aprill 22) when following on from the share issue launch in March, the Churnet Valley began operating its Cauldon Lowe Excursions. For the 2011 season, roughly one weekend a month, the CVR is to operate 2x trips a
