%199 @ Barry 1969

We have been sent an interesting photo of 5199 taken by Fred Kerr at Barry on the 15th November 1969.

Two things are remarkable about this view:

  • The comparative completeness of her at this date, 6 years into her stay at Barry.
  • The visibility of the older Great Western lettering showing through the later British Railways livery.

I guess that Barry scrapyard was only just beginning to become well known by this date, steam only being gone from the railway network for just over a year, so had not started to attract the attention it did four or five years later, and as these old girls were pretty solid 6 years in the sea air had only just started to take the paint coat off!

I've linked to a full size image, 1.1mb, if you want to take a closer look.

Thank's Fred for the photo, and any comments would be welcome, just let us know.
